I just got back from a vacation (with a lot of overindulgence—less sleep, alcohol, too much food, and in the wrong combinations—fruit with cheese, anyone?), and I’ll be honest—I’m feeling a little off.
My digestion is sluggish, my energy is low, and my body is asking for balance.

Maybe you’ve been there too—after a trip, a holiday, or just stepping out of routine for a while. It’s easy to think we need a strict detox to “make up” for indulgence, but Ayurveda teaches that balance isn’t about restriction. Instead, it’s about small, nourishing steps that actually make you feel good.
And here’s the thing—how you reset should match your dosha.
Not sure what your dominant dosha is? Take my quick Ayurvedic quiz!

How Overindulgence Affects Each Dosha (And How to Reset)
Different doshas react to food, travel, and routine changes in different ways. Here’s how to know what’s happening in your body and how to bring it back into balance.
Vata (Air & Space) – The Overstimulated Wanderer
I have some Vata tendencies, so when I overindulge, I can feel wired but exhausted—my sleep is off, digestion slows down (hello, bloating), and my mind feels a little scattered.
Vatas love new experiences, but erratic meals, cold foods (iced drinks!), and lack of routine can easily throw them off balance.
Vata Reset:
Eat warm, grounding foods like kitchari, oatmeal with cinnamon, or roasted root veggies
Stay hydrated with warm water and herbal teas like ginger, licorice, or fennel
Slow things down with gentle movement—think slow yoga, walking, or self-massage with sesame oil
Pitta (Fire & Water) – The Fiery Feaster
Pittas tend to go all in—rich food, late nights, and maybe a little too much wine or spicy dishes. (Hello, Poblano Chicken Enchiladas) When Pitta is off balance, it can show up as acid reflux, irritability, or feeling overheated (physically and emotionally).
Pitta Reset:
Favor cooling, soothing foods like coconut water, cucumber, and basmati rice
Incorporate bitter and astringent flavors like greens, fennel, and peppermint tea
Take a step back! Pittas tend to over-plan their “perfect reset,” so this is the time to slow down and relax
Kapha (Earth & Water) – The Slow Starter
Kaphas feel the heaviest after indulgence—digestion slows down, energy dips, and getting back on track feels like a struggle. If you’re feeling sluggish, congested, or unmotivated, Kapha imbalance might be at play.
Kapha Reset:
Lighten up meals with warm soups, lentils, turmeric, ginger, and black pepper
Get moving! A brisk walk, dance session, or dynamic yoga flow can help shake off stagnation
Wake up early and avoid naps to keep energy levels up
My Simple Morning Reset (For Any Dosha!)
No matter your type, this gentle Ayurvedic morning routine always helps me feel more like myself:
✔ Start the day with warm water with lemon & ginger to wake up digestion
✔ Move your body—even just 5-10 minutes of stretching or a short walk
✔ Eat light, warm, and easily digestible meals
✔ Ditch the guilt & focus on small steps that help you feel good

Whether it’s a full vacation or just a mini reset at home, stepping away from routine—yes, even with a little overindulgence—is an important part of balance. Ayurveda teaches that joy, rest, and new experiences nourish us just as much as mindful eating and daily rituals. So instead of regretting the extra food or late nights, embrace the renewal that comes from change, and with a few small shifts, you’ll feel refreshed, rebalanced, and ready for what’s next.
